I'm going to do what I do best and make a short story long before I get to my point. Anyways,I recently acquired 4 rifles from my father.I didn't look at them in great detail because my dad giving me his guns are almost impossible.
Anyways,he told me one of them was a .223. He knows his guns as to what brand, caliber, etc just by sight (or so I thought). I was at Dicks sporting goods and decided while I was there to just pick up some ammo. Bought a 100 round box of .223.
Today,I decided to get the one rifle out and clean it(the.223).While cleaning it I found it is not a .223 but its a 30 06(not disappointed at that in any way)
Now to my stupid question. My dad has been collecting guns longer then I have been alive and doesn't usually make mistakes,so I am wondering can you fire .223 thru a 30 06 (personally I don't think so but I want someone more knowledgeable then I) I would really hate to tell the wife I have to get another gun because I have ammo and nothing to shoot it thru (yeah right) |

No way can you fire .223 through a 30-06.
They are different in all way except they go boom.
.223 is a 22 Cal and 30-06 is a 30 cal. don't even try it.

Thanks for the reply guys. I didn't have any 30 06 shells and I didn't want to try a .223 to see if it would fit and get something jammed in the barrel. I bought a box today and yeah,no way. about twice the size of the .223. So now I am going to have to buy a .223 rifle. Aw damn |

Word to the wise, never ever fire any ammunition that is not stamped on the firearm!!!! if it is stamped 223 use 223. That small round in a 30-06 chamber would have exploded in the chamber if it did in fact detonate!!!! Even 5.56 nato and .223 are not the same, no matter what anyone tells you. They are infact the same size but a 5.56 has more load and should not be fired in 223 chamber! |

Of course, 556 is about two and a half times as large as 223.

2.54 times as large to be precise....1 in. = 25.4 mm. |

556 / 223 = 2.4933 rounded to the 4th decimal place.
223 * 2.54 = 566.42
You're off a bit. |

Sorry, I meant to refer to the spec sizes (.223 is a .224 inch diameter bullet, 5.56x45 is a 5.7mm bullet). Of course, I will ignore the 1/1000th millimeter rounding error there. |

I am just making a joke. I know there's a difference between 5.56mm and .223 (inch measurement).
I was using the same scale for them both. |

dakattack, just curious. Have you taken a look at the rest of the rifles your dad gave you? If so, what did he give you and in what caliber?
Again, just curious. |
