I was working late 1am and was getting ready to leave.

I open the door and I hear a distinct voice counting down like they are leading a group who is going to charge me and do god know what.

i went back inside and locked up.

I grabbed 2 spears and a hammer and thought what was the safest thing to do for awhile. (Wrong tools for the job but I had to use what I had. the gun was in the car unloaded encased and locked securely. In acc with Illinois state law.) (I know locked isn't part of Ill state law)

few moments of thought I called the operator for the non-emergency local police. it took me 5 trys to get somebody who would tell me how to get the number without going through voice prompt hell.

about 2 minutes latter I was amazed how quick there were 2 squad cars and 2 officers. they did a quick search of the area and found nobody.

the officers stayed untill I locked up the store and left in my car.

those are the facts

here are my observations.

if there was indeed a group of people waiting to assault or steal from me I was saved because of a loud mouth punk speaking to loudly.

a gun unloaded and encased would do me no good in that situation.

If I had my gun and decided to holster up I would be sitting in jail right now. especially in illinois.

if this were indiana I would have called the police just the same because I can not afford mentally or financially to shoot somebody. however if it's a choice between me or them there is no choice to make it will be them.

I'm done working late.... I thought being in the middle of nowhere was an advantage, it is and it's also a disadvantage.

work is a scuba diving shop spears were the easiest thing I could think of to increase distance between me and my threat.

if I had to use them I bet it would have made the front cover. when was the last time you heard of a criminal getting speared?

Ok, THAT makes sense. I thought maybe you worked at a natural history museum. My father was a diver. I however do not care for the water ever since it tried to drown me when I was about 9 years old.

Global warming is actually my attempt at ridding the Earth of killer water.

I've always had VERY POOR response when calling the police until I devised a new tactic. If I need to call I always end the asking if it's illegal to discharge a firearm in ....
Response has GREATLY improved.

You probably called the cops on some kids playing hide-and-seek! 3, 2, 1, Ready or not, here I come!!! But seriously if it was something bad, at least you were heads up enough to recognize the situation!! Take no chances!! Glad everything is ok!

at 1 am in the mourning those aren't kids playing hide and seek.

im in the middle of nowhere there it is a hike to get to anything.

and thinking it through, sleeping in the upstairs office chair(untill mourning) wouldn't be safe either. they could break down the glass door and come right on in.

the end result was nothing happened and it gives me a very good solid reason never to work late.

question::
there is a bill signed into law that allows store owners to authorize customers and employees to carry concealed firearms. does anybody remember what that law is?

if the boss wonders why I can't get stuff done on time and am not working late you think he would give me an notorized authorization to carry a concealed firearm? I could just imagine their faces

quid pro quo

like I said before if I heard what I heard even with a gun I would have called the police just the same. I can't afford to shoot somebody, but maybe next time there won't be some loud mouth punk to warn me.

dam you illinois!!!!

A similar situation happened to me a few years ago (this situation prompted me to carry at work, always). A co-worker and I were working late one night in a second floor office and I noticed an individual bounding up the staircase outside our office (a 2-story multi-tenant building in an industrial park). We were the only ones in the building at the time. I think the individual was surprised to find 2 people because he stopped in his tracks and started stumbling his words when asked what he was doing there.

He started saying something about selling steaks out of his car and saw the light on in the building and thought we might be interested in purchasing these "left-over" steaks. We told him to get lost and he beat feet out of there without argument or hesitation.

I carefully followed him to ensure he left the building and then locked the door behind him. Since then, I promptly lock the door around 5pm each night. After several months of contemplation, I began the process of being armed while at work.

It started out with buying a lock box, mounting it in one of my metal filing cabinets and keeping a .40 cal in it (loaded). It progressed to getting my Utah CC permit, some additional training (Massad's MAG-40 and others) and carrying concealed while at work and home, always. Recently I became an NRA instructor in all disciplines.

Most of my employees know me as a "gun guy" and some probably suspect that I carry, but don't know for sure. I've trained several of them and shoot with a few on a regular basis. As of yet, none have asked about carrying at work; however, I've considered how I would handle it if I were approached about if from any of my employees.

you sound like your the owner and can ccw on your property legally.

in my case, nothing can make you consider breaking the law on several accounts like your life being in danger. and I have never had my stomach been so twisted about making a decision than that night.

my gun was 7 feet away from the entrance of the building locked in my car, I had my holster on me as normally I am breaking it in, my fanny pack was on the middle seat and for some reason I didn't fanny pack that night.

work is in crook county I can only imagine that the District attorney would want to make an example of me.
work is in the bush and somebody could unoad an entire magazine into me it is very possible nobody would hear a thing or call the police. or vise versa

when I leave I have to activate an alarm and I have 60 seconds to close the building. if I activate the alarm wrong the police will come I don't want to be caught with an alarm going off and me carrying a gun in that situation.

It takes all of 45 seconds for me to lock up and turn the key to my enjin of my car. that leaves very little time to clear my chamber and remove my magazine in a safe manner. FACING the facts if im going to get attaked it will be after I lock up.

THERE ARE NO GOOD CHOICES TO MAKE ALL CHOICES I HAVE AVALIABLE ARE BAD CHOICES.

sure I can call the police once. and doing that I at least have some evidence that I am not out for blood. that I called the police when I belived I was going to be attaked
but maybe my "spider sense" won't be able to detect it next time it happens and all i have is a little stupid ka-bar instead of firearm. to defend myself. no police no gun and I'm outnumbered.

I said it before and I'll say it again...Illinois sucks

it is always for the "what if scenario" "Just in case" "I hope not"

Illinois sucks
