So here is what I am thinking.

A real burglar proof safe is too much $$$ for me. If I am going to buy a cheap safe then I might as well not buy a safe. I am mostly interested in just securing the firearms and ammo from my kids, their friends, and looky loos. As such I am thinking of just getting a storage cabinet from Menards. It's 6' tall by 3' wide and 1.5' deep. It's normally $189, but I've seen it for $125. It has a little keyed lock, but I will put two hasps with combo locks on it. I will also add some carpetting to one side of the interior, as it is split into two vertically. I will store the rifles of there.

It provides me a LOT of storage space for a low price.

What are your thoughts?

It's not fireproof, and it's easily broken into so w hy pay more for less storage space?

At Farm and Fleet in Woodstock last week I saw a nice safe. it looked to be a 20ish gun with nice interior, digital keypad lock, and a 30 minute fire rating for $499.

Anyway you look at it that is a really good price for a secure place to keep your ammo and firearms.

Since my neighbors had their entire 350 LB. safe stolen, I think you are on to something.

Perhaps a cheap safe or locker like you described that would be camouflaged? I noticed that a moving box that hangs clothes seems to be the same size as the cheaper safes. A few bolts into concrete and some misdirection should be all you need unless someone else knows exactly where to look.

Now that sounds like a pretty good idea!! Sometimes the best hiding place is in plain sight. I may just try that one myself.

I got one of these Dakota Safes that you can assemble anywhere. Real safe (fire rated, combo lock, etc) and I can move it myself.

Most of you guys are located way up north, so I don't know if you have heard of Rural King, a farm supply store, however, they have a special for Black Friday on a Stack On 38 gun fire and water proof safe for $599. I know its not the best of safes, but from what I have seen, it looks as good as any of the other Chinese safes. The farthest north store is Peru, with the rest starting a Bloomington and south.

I used to use one of those metal locking cabinets, but it didn't feel secure enough, so i replaced it pretty quickly. I got a cheap gun safe at Menards, and i know it's not the best, but it was only 400. I think it's fairly secure, for a cheap safe, because of how it's installed.

It's in a tiny closet, tucked back in such a manner where you can't pry on the door, either side, without removing it from the closet. I bolted it down to the floor AND the wall behind it. It's not perfect, but i feel a lot better than i did when i had the metal cabinet.

Yep, I bought one of those at Menard's too for use as an extra hidden-wall-closet safe where I keep ammo and handguns. It's secure enough from the average burglar/kids/nosy people if they ever discovered it. I didn't bolt it down, but have it totally filled with ammunition and a few handguns inside that would make it a real beyotch to move or break into without busting walls.
