i get pulled over it's an unmarked heck even a marked car and I want to know who I'm dealing with.

what kind of ID do cops carry what does it look like and how do I ask to see it?

how do i tell if it's real or fake, police impersonator or actual cop?

I've heard them encourage people to call 911 if they are concerned.

yeah if you are concerned you should call the local police department while he is in his car or after he walks back, not necessarily 911. Also just ask simple questions. Name, department, badge number, maybe even a card. alot of officers even will have a card. get a good description of him/ the car and a license plate number to also give the police when you call.

How did you get pulled over? Lights, siren, horn....

And was he wearing a uniform at all?

Many that are concerned like this will drive slowly being followed, to a large parking lot, or may call 911 while being pulled over. Be prepared for some extra cr### p for doing this but it is for your safety. And also for the officer if you become scared to a point of reaction not becoming...

let me clarify my question.

this is a what if question.

what if I got pulled over, what Id are officers required to provide upon your request?

also how do I tell if it is authentic.

I'd like to know what police are required to provide me for identifying themselves as police.

The requirement for a police office to give his/her badge number to the person they are stoping is a matter of each department. Some departments require they give their badge and/or police id number but not all.

If you are stopped and believe the police office is not authentice, tell him/her that you are not 100% conviced are you are calling 911 to verify it. 911 will have a record of police calls that are active and who is responding to each call. Tell the 911 operator you are being stopped by a suspicous person claiming to be a police office and request that they send someone to your location. Then ask the 911 operator and the police office the same quetions concering who is currently at the call and what he/she is driving since police cars each have a unique number and licence plate. Then get as much information about the person claiming to be the police officer.

If the 911 operator does not have a call open for you being stoped tell him/her imediatly that someone claiming to be a cop has stoped you and what he/she is driving and what he/she looks like and also if they are armed or not.

I got most of this information from my girlfriend of roughly 4 years who is currently a defense lawyer. While she didn't know of any specific laws off the top of her head she did give me this advice to pass on to you guys.

Hope it helps some
