Any thoughts on open carry while riding a motorcycle? Has anyone had any experience?

Good question! OK,no OC while riding, but what if you don't have any saddlebags...would you just strap it to your seat?? If you do have SB,would that be good enough to carry the case in?

I do most of my riding in WI and would like to know how to stay legal.

Thanks!

Personally I equate saddle bags to the trunk of a car. An unloaded encased handgun may be placed in saddle bags. I would not place it in a backpack unless I had no other choice. I would rather strap it to the seat.
I recognize that the reality is that there would likely never be probable cause to search your backpack if pulled over.

Thanks for the comments.
Now envision this:
It's Memorial Day weekend and the Wisconsin Dells is full of tourists.
The wife and I rumble into the Dells on my Electra-Glide and pull up/park in front of Nig's bar. We get off the bike and I open the tour pack, pull out my 45, slam a full magazine into it, chamber a round and put it in the holster.
This is gonna' cause a quite a commotion amongst the citizens I would think.

Thanks to Wisconsin lawmakers, that's what law biding citizens have to do to protect themselves.

If the citizenry doesn't like it, ask your lawmakers to implement less cumbersome carry laws!

Not your problem...
So long as you do not step into Nig's bar, you are good to go... Also, be careful as you walk east downtown. Once you get past Oak Street a bit you are walking into a Gun Free School Zone. I don't know where the school "grounds" ends exactly, so I am making an informed guess. Know for certain before you get close to it. A felony is nothing to mess with. Trinity Lutheran School is on Church Street.

there is another gray area that is highly debated........"out of reach or not out of reach". so lets assume for arguments sake that it has to be out of reach, and so for arguments sake we try to place it as far as possible.

if you have a trunk on the bike, place it there. if you don't have a trunk but have saddle bags, place it there. if you don't have trunk or saddle bags, but there is enough room under the seat (some sport bikes if you use a small case) place it there. if you don't have either of those, then it's either a backpack or strapping it down on the back seat.

i WOULD NOT strap it on the back seat (personal opinion), and here is why. it's visible, and if a cop suspects it's a gun, he might decide to be a dick and harass you about it. also in a absolute worst case scenario, it could come loose and fall off the bike.
SO FOR THAT REASON
i would put it in a backpack. and if anybody is still concerned about the "out of reach part", i invite anybody to try and remove a enclosed gun from just about any of those places. i know for a fact that i can not reach my saddle bags, because i've tried. i know for a fact that i can not reach a backpack that is properly secured on my back. and i know for a fact that you can not get under the seat on a sport bike while moving.

Whitey----where in Wisconsin do you ride???

jj60187----why did you pull up in front of a bar??? just asking. make sure you do NOT enter a place that sells liquor, a school zone, or "public building".......and obviously all the other rules associated with open carrying in wisconsin. have you signed up on opencarry.org yet???
as for the part about pulling out your gun, loading a magazine into it and holstering it..............................YUP.............only way to carry in wisconsin, and the only way to stay legal around the vehicle law. load/unload/load/unload everytime you get in and out, on or off a vehicle.

Down in IL also. I am thinking of riding to range soon. I might sling my AR-15 in a soft case across my back. I don't know about the legality of that in WI. My rifle won't fit in my saddles bags.

Whitey,

I just picked a familiar place that's in town with a lot of tourists about on a holiday weekend for my example.
