Crime Report
D.C. Police Boost Patrols Around Landmarks
By BRETT ZONGKER
Associated Press Writer

July 12, 2006, 2:52 PM CDT

WASHINGTON -- Police beefed up patrols around national landmarks Wednesday, a day after the District of Columbia's police chief declared a crime emergency in response to a string of violence that included the killing of a British activist.

At least 14 people have been killed in Washington already this month, and in the last 30 days robberies have risen 14 percent and armed assaults have jumped 18 percent. Last year, homicides in the city fell to a 20-year low of 195.

Police Chief Charles Ramsey's emergency declaration allows commanders more flexibility to adjust officers' schedules and reassign them to high-crime areas.

Just hours after the declaration, two groups of tourists were robbed at gunpoint on the National Mall, both by men dressed all in black. The U.S. Park Police, who patrol the Mall and are separate from the D.C. police, posted more officers in the area in response.

"We're going to reallocate our resources. We're going to see what improvements we can make," said Park Police Sgt. Scott Fear.

Park Police were looking for connections between the robberies and three similar incidents in the area in late May. There have been no arrests in any of those cases.

Those killed in the recent violence include British activist Alan Senitt, a volunteer for the potential presidential campaign of former Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner. His throat was slit Sunday in the affluent Georgetown area, and police say his attackers attempted to rape his companion.

It would seem that criminals aren't obeying the 100s of gun laws on the books in D.C. right now. Maybe if they pass a few hundred more, the criminals will think twice? As for the throat-slitting murder and attempted rape, why haven't we banned knives and penises? I think some "common-sense" knive and penis laws would really send a message and work wonders to prevent crimes like this, don't you agree? Or perhaps we could repeal the laws prohibiting self-defense and watch Washington D.C. balance itself again. Instead of trying to take away guns from the bad guys by outlawing them for everyone, why not GIVE guns to the good guys and let them protect themselves?

Give every other woman in D.C. a pistol. It could even be a pink pistol. How bold will criminals then be, knowing they have about a 50% chance of getting a cap in their butt when attempting rape? Way to go Washington, for really making a shining example of "freedom" and "common-sense" in this country. I personally just think our Congress, particularly the Senate, is a little afraid of letting the masses have guns. With the direction THEY'VE been taking this country -- I'd be afraid if I were them too.
