"Obergeist" showcases Brady's idea

(To the read the story as posted in the Chicago Tribune..... Click Here)

After taking the time out to read this story I am just not sure that Oberweis is honest in what he says as far as it goes with repealing the FOID. Although, it does make a lot of sense. Oberweis was not the first to say he would do it.

Bill Brady was the first to call for it!

I am not saying that I wouldn't trust Mr. Oberweis with our Second Amendment rights. Rather, my question is only this, Is he just showcasing or is he for real? I would love for someone from his camp to answer this question if they would. better yet let him answer it.

Republican governor candidate Jim Oberweis sought to bolster his 2nd Amendment credentials on Sunday, telling visitors to a gun shop near Rockford that he would explore a repeal of the state's firearm owner's identification card law.

Another candidate, state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, received the endorsement of former Atty. Gen. Jim Ryan, the state's unsuccessful 2002 GOP contender for governor. Ryan's backing prompted sharp criticism of Topinka by rival Ron Gidwitz's campaign.

Meanwhile, the fourth major GOP candidate for governor in the March 21 primary, state Sen. Bill Brady of Bloomington, joined other candidates in visiting the west suburban Addison Township GOP organization as his campaign readied a new biographical TV ad airing Monday on collar county cable stations.

During an hourlong appearance at the Bullet Stop Gun Shop in Loves Park, Oberweis handed out his namesake ice cream as he told supporters he would not back additional restrictions on firearms and questioned the need for FOID cards.

"I'm not sure what real purpose it serves," Oberweis said of the FOID cards, which are required to buy a firearm in Illinois and require a card holder to undergo an initial state police background check.

"Why do we need them?" Oberweis asked later. "Most states don't have them. You can use your driver's license."

He also said background checks of gun purchasers were "reasonable" but said he felt "satisfied" with current gun laws. Oberweis' fellow conservative in the race, Brady, has already called for a repeal of the FOID card law.

In Chicago, Topinka received the endorsement of Ryan.

In public appearances on Sunday, Gidwitz initially downplayed Ryan's endorsement of Topinka. "The real issue is not who's endorsing you. The real issue, fundamentally, is, how are you going to manage once you take office," Gidwitz said.

As has become a pattern recently, the Gidwitz campaign later issued a statement much harsher than the candidate's initial public remarks.

"It's time for Ms. Topinka to run on her own record and not hide behind someone else's," said a statement attributed to Gidwitz. "She needs to stand on her own two feet and stop looking for someone else from the past to prop her up."
